The highly anticipated annual Christmas lighting of the Washington Monument marks the official beginning of the holiday season in Baltimore. This tradition began 44 years ago with Mt. Vernon neighborhood residents lighting candles and singing carols.
This year the monument marked its official bicentennial! Learn more about the monument and some of the fascinating discoveries during its renovation including an intact time capsule from July 4, 1815 in a story I wrote for What Weekly.
The Monument has been reopened for visits now that renovations are complete. Don’t miss the chance to climb the tower- the views are amazing.
And get ready for 2016 which promises to be even brighter for Baltimore with the inaugural Light City Baltimore – the first large-scale, international light festival in the United States, homegrown in Baltimore!
